Never Never Had a Chance

Did I make a bold proclamation
like ‘Never Again!’
Only to find myself drowning
as I’m swallowing Sin?

Could I say ‘Never’
and then follow through?
Could Never ever find a way
to make itself true?

Never has to work so hard
to keep itself away,
to hide behind sharp corners
of eyes that fight the stray.

Never has to wait so long - 
until the Fateful Day
when you give in to that sweet Sin
and Never goes away.

Never never had a chance.
It’s such a loser’s bet.
Never’s only Never
because it hasn’t happened yet.

Did you and your Old Friend Temptation
trade ‘never again’
for a quick fix of sickness
- as always, running thin?

It’s only dream is not to be.
If Never ever had a hope
It certainly can’t count on me
I’ll make it Ever (as I dope).
